APIs have transitioned from a pure technology choice of building software to actual business models. There are almost 20 different ways to monetize an API, both directly and indirectly. More and more companies use APIs as their primary revenue stream; others use APIs to unlock data, gain additional distribution, build stronger partnerships, and improve customer relations. Even non tech related companies are releasing public APIs and building modern apps on internal APIs. We're at an inflation point in the history of IT: you either embrace the API economy or you will be left behind.
